What
What's New In The Year 2003?

Tuesday, November 04, 2003 by Slot Zero

  • I've put up a second development server just for custom maps to test my custom map code.  There are 90 maps in the rotation but I will be adding more maps over time.  For the maps and server details, click here.
  • Added custom map support with enhanced voting capability!  Server Ops need only edit 1 file to load custom maps on the server and have them included in the rotation and custom map menu.
  • Many of the client console commands work on the server console!  Commands like last, show-settings, and even the map names work directly from the server console.
  • Enhanced level voting!  Type the map name you want to vote for instead of picking a random one.
  • New weapon and alternate for single-shotgun; Tornados!  Feature request from Baker.
  • Added 5 new runes; super blue stuff, blizzard, thor, sniper, and sonar. (Many more to come!)
  • Added custom spawn spots for some levels.
  • Some exit teleporters transport you to other locations.
  • Added practice mode (currently admin changeable only).
  • Added GL spam protection (currently only for use with practice mode).
  • Your current ammo is properly displayed when picking up a weapon that you are yielding and is also your current best-weapon.
  • Shamblers no longer attack you while they are frozen.
  • The "last" command was increased from listing 7 players to 10.

A lot of these changes are documented in greater detail on the Developers Discussion  of the Rune Central Forums.

The development server has a new IP!

quake.shmack.net / 69.64.35.230

If you attempt to connect the old IP, it will forward you to the new server.

Would you like to run your own Quake server?  It's cheaper than you think!

I'll be adding more runes and weapons to the Rune Quake development server over the next few weeks.  If you see me on the server, stop in and say hello; chances are I've added something new and need help testing.

quake.shmack.net / 69.12.84.53

If you find a bug or would like to make a suggestion, please feel free to e-mail me or post your message on the Rune Central Forums.

In addition, check out Baker's new documentation projects.

tech.runecentral.com and hypergate.runecentral.com

Thank you Baker!

Official version 0.9 released, get it here.

  • Typing "last" on the development server will provide a list of the last 7 players to disconnect and at what time they did so.
  • The gold key, which indicates when a rider is present, should work normally.
  • You can preserve self health without being in team mode.  [Idea from Shmack]
  • The thinks for gravity and repulsion use a constant value instead of using sys_ticrate.  This saves you the trouble of having to adjust their values every time you change the tick.

Have a great Fourth of July weekend!

  • I added a "basic rune" option.  This option allows only the four basic runes to be present.  The four runes are: strength, regeneration, resistance, and haste.  [Idea from Shmack]
  • You can force the maximum number of traps a player can set per rune.  This is useful if your server has a 0 drop delay and many runes.  For example, if a player picks up the ice traps, lays six traps, deletes the rune and picks up the ice traps again; she won't be able to place anymore ice traps until the original ones expire. [Idea from Mr. Happy]
  • In Quakeword, the phoenix rune causes problems in a number of ways.  In order to minimize these effects, the phoenix rune works just like the original Artifact phoenix. [Suggestion from Mr. Happy]
  • When a server is in Team Mode, the ice trap particles (normally all blue) will contain a hint of the players skin color.
  • You can no longer change your shirt color when teams are enforced.

Snapshot version 0.8 released, get it here.

I've decided to bite my lip and continue to keep the Quake and Quakeworld sources merged.  I've already updated the development Quakeworld server with the latest changes, so expect a snapshot release soon.

  • Alternate weapons no longer cycle when you use impulse 10 or impulse 12 (cycle weapons up or down).  To permit them, I added a new command, cycle-alternates.
  • I fixed a bug with the recall rune reporting to riders a false reading when the rune-tell command is used.

I realize now that I didn't point out a few things that I should have at the release of snapshot version 0.7.5.

  • Releases will no longer contain the Quakeworld source.  Official release 0.6 is the last version where the sources are merged.
  • The mod will only compile with qccx 1.0 and frikqcc 2.5.  Both of these are available on the ftp site.  I doubt I will support frikqcc versions later than 2.5 due to compatibility issues.

Additionally, Dr. Gibbs from The Deathmatch Zone has written a review about Rune Quake.  Check it out here.

The mysql daemon was down for a good portion of the day preventing access to the message board.  Thanks to everyone who reported the problem.

I moved the bulk of the runequake.com site to a temporary location but I didn't include the ftp server or message board. To access these portions (until Monday, March 3rd), force runecentral.com in the address bar.  Both runequake.com and runecentral.com should be restored to normal operation later next week.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by Slot Zero

The hosting package for runecentral.com has been scheduled for termination on Monday, March 3rd.  It's possible that several days will pass until it is active again under a new host.  I'm going to point runequake.com to a status page until my new host account is setup.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

  • There's a new vote option: vote-hook.
  • I reinstated vote-team on the development server.
  • The vote-hook and vote-team setting will reset to off when the server is empty and process_cvars() is called (within 2 minutes).
  • You no longer cloak while continuously firing the nail or lightning gun.
  • The admin menu has been restructured.
  • The mod can detect when the ProQuake server detects a QSmack client.
  • Many internal changes (qccx related).
  • The web site hasn't moved yet and should be moving by the end of this week.
  • I'll start releasing snapshots in March.

I registered channel #runequake on GamesNET IRC.  You can access it with any IRC client (i.e. irc, mIRC, Trillian).  If you're new to IRC and don't want to bother installing another piece of software, you might want to try GamesNET's Java Chat client located here.  For more information and support about GamesNET, click here.

Note: The Java Chat client didn't work for me in Netscape 4.8.

Saturday, February 08, 2003 by Slot Zero

Sometime this month I'll be moving the runequake.com web site to a new host.  You may experience some down time when trying to reach _any_ of the subdomains associated with runequake.com (i.e. quake.runequake.com).  If this occurs, you can substitute runequake.com with runecentral.com as it will remain hosted until runequake.com is set up correctly.

Those of you who I am not in contact with regularly that use the runequake.com e-mail alias or DNS entry should contact me if you wish to continue using them.  If you do not have an e-mail alias or DNS entry but would like to create one, information will be available after the move.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Since the separation of the poq and qw sources, I haven't been releasing any of my changes in the form of snapshots.  Most of these changes haven't had any direct affect on game-play, which is why I haven't been making game related news entries either.  I will change the version number on the development server to indicate my progress though, so expect a release as this number nears one (0.8+).
