Hey Slot & everyone--

Don't know about the rest of you, but the Start map drives me crazy. Spammers' paradise (no offense, *Paradise* :-P). No skill required; leave talent @ the door.

I don't mind playing it on Shmack occasionally, but the newbs vote for it endlessly, time & again.

Same thing (IMO) goes for End (Shub) & E1M7 (Chton).

Brainstorm: Any way to limit the # of times these maps are voted for? Say once every 4 hours or something? Or worst case scenario: How about a different port that runs ONLY those 3 maps--that way they can be excluded from Shmack:26000?

I'd be interested in others' thoughts on the issue.

Thank you for your time.
:-)

I feel your pain, see my strategy on how to deal with them. Maybe that can help you. I do not mind it as through tactics I can easily overcome them. Although I am winning, some of them do get scores into the 40s and once they reach up there, they do get me nervous. :?

First, hiya Finny! :)

Second, those maps drive me bugnuts too. It wouldn't be bad if they were played once every few hours but the constant voting of those maps make the come up way too often. I used to really love Start, one of my favorite maps, until the advent of the gas grenade (which needs to go in my opinion) after that it became unplayable. I will play it, and usually win, but would prefer not to.

Hi Cher & Tia--thanks for the replies.

It's not so much on tactics to beat spam-newbs. I guess I'm just tired of playing their endless, no-talent maps.

You could make an argument that if you limited the amount of times those maps could be voted for, the newbs would leave & not play, further depleting the ranks of an already down-&-on-its-way-out 12 yr old game.

Of course the flip side to that coin is this: I don't play Shmack as much as I used to, & I'm sure there are other "old-schoolers" who avoid it as well. Why? The endless parade of these ridiculous maps.

So if things change, fewer newbs. If things don't change, fewer old-schoolers.

*sigh*
*shrug*

Yes!

I remember a wonderful game where Cloudy sat still (no joke) and threw continuous gas grenades for about 5 minutes from the same spot.

I asked him "Why are you playing like that? It's not like you can't play a respectable game and still compete."

He said something about how he had a 100 rockets wanted to use them.

Some people use gas grenades, some people hunt down newly spawned players. It's all fun baby!

How about a "you can't use gas grenades but aren't affected by them either option"?

LOL

Sounds like a good idea. Let me know what other features or runes you don't like and I'll remove them.

I added some code last week to help minimize this but it's still in the development stage. I'm going to add a new command soon, I will probably call it "never", which will always force a no vote for whatever is being voted on. This is useful because it increases the vote percentage and reduces the number of broadcast messages.

At the risk of others hating me, my oppinion is to leave everything as is.

Those maps, especially Start, get voted for 2-3 times in a row at most. Yes, the noobs do spam, and if you are a high profile player you can finish the map fairly fast and move-on to the next one.

I know some of them may be abusing the gas nades, and that is their way -some may call it lame- to earn some frags. Truth is that noobs -referring to play tactics, not years played- are into the majority and high profile-skilled players are into the minority. If these noobs do not get any frags and it is extremely tough for them to score, they will leave and there will be nobody to play with. :(

Experienced players know how to circumvent their tactics and score, therefore, the whole system runs itself. Hopefully, with my play-guide and knowing how to play better, the noobs can learn a more skilled, refined and therefore -enjoyable- way of playing and move-on from these spam maps and cease to employ these "lame" tactics that pisses everyone off. However, I believe they should naturally progress to this stage on their own by realizing, and not being forced to - since they are the skill-group who mostly play.

In conclusion, for all fairness, I believe there should be a limit to how many times a map can be played in a row to satisfy everybody. :)

Regards.

See, now that's all I ask. I don't want to chase the newbs away either. But I don't like playing those maps anymore, so I tend to leave. & I know others do, too. So who you wanna play with? ;-)

PS--Slot, the "never" command sounds like a great option. Would cut way down on the never-ending spam map votes getting passed.

I didn't catch that.

That would be great instead of having to type "no" a thousand times.
