Right now, both JoeQuake and QRack come with pak0.pak with quake.rc files that do not contain demos.
As far as I can tell, the reason this is done is because for many it is more convenient to not have the demos run on start.
The downside to this is that demos serve as self-explanatory tutorial videos for new players to see and understand the game and how it works.
Rather than have to make the tough choice of whether to have JoeQuake/QRack ALWAYS play or ALWAYS NOT play demos, it would be nice if eventually this were an option.
If there were a cvar like: cl_startdemos 0 (0 = off, 1 = default = on) this would allow an average user to make this decision.
(For those that don't know: The STARTDEMOS command is in standard id1 quake.rc and is not the same command as PLAY (demo name) so I don't see any adverse effects to a variable that would allow the user to enable or disable the STARTDEMOS operation.)
In the JoeQuake EZ Installer I built, which is targeted to new players, there are STARTDEMOS, but I have to admit I don't really like those running all the time.
