Where can Quake be downloaded at besides FilePlanet/Gamespy and P2P filesharing? Is there anywhere this can be done? I did a search of this entire forum before asking but came up with million search results based on my query but didn't find what I was looking for. The answer to this question should be made into a sticky. |

The answer to this question should be made into a sticky. http://freequake.quakeone.com ... although it does not contain the registered pak1.pak. I have mixed feelings about this next line: Pak1.pak can be obtained at http://0z.quake1dm.com/Pak1.zip (which you decompress into quake\id1 to make a shareware install into a registered install. My mixed feelings on pak1.pak wrote: ID Software really doesn't sell Quake 1 anymore, not even the Ultimate Quake CD is available anymore than contained Quake, Quake II and Quake III (I have one from E-Bay). It's not available new via any store, physical or online.
Supposedly, ID Software intends to GPL the pak files. It says this on Wikipedia, but I have been unable to conclusively verify this. I'm not saying it's not true, this may very well be the case. I'm just saying I'd feel better if I could conclusively verify it is true. According to Wikipedia wrote: "although a GPL release of all of the quake1 maps is planned" It could also be the case that pak1.pak is "unofficially" GPL'd, as in ID Software hasn't taken the time to pay the lawyers and make an annoucement, per se, but consider it free. Such is the case with a lot of tools for Quake 2, I've heard, where they are considered GPL'd, but without an official announcement. Many of the CDs of "Quake" sold on E-Bay -- like a lot of game CD's or even other software -- are not legit and that money is not going into ID's pocket. Since they don't really sell it, I don't see the harm in it (downloading pak1.pak), but would rather ID officially make the Quake 1 pak1.pak GPL. |
