Post subject:  SQPro and Linux Servers?

Phenom is having problems getting the sqpro binary to run in Linux on bomber.ironrocket.com. Unixed runs. A special squake-ihoc works. Sqpro doesn't seem to work.

The server is running Linux, I couldn't tell you the exact details but both unixed and squake-ihoc ran just fine.

Are there any particulars about sqpro and Linux that are known?

slot has been helping me a lot with sqpro. Right now I know that you have to install the old vga libraries for sqpro to run.

I've still encountered 2 problems with sqpro:
1) mouse won't work (something has to be configed in the vga files :S)
2) I have to use SU priviledges to have access to the vga libraries.

slot hasn't replied with an answer yet :O If slot can't solve it, WHO CAN?! :O

Being a Linux idiot ... could you provide some links to "the old vga libraries".

Well, ProQuake is the only decent server that can run Quake. Most gaming servers run Linux.

I don't know who/where/how the answers to this can be determined ... I know that in Phenom's server can run unixed and squake-ihoc ... is it even possible different libraries could be required for sqpro?

That seems bizarre.

Anyway, somewhere, somehow there needs to be some documentation of this because otherwise this is a really restricting factor to there being any servers in the future ... isn't it? Non-ProQuake servers have tons of vulnerabilities.

And I really don't care who answers the questions -- I'll document the stuff -- but how can someone put a new server without being able to tell the gaming host what to do to make ProQuake work.

The number of people that can actually answer these kinds of questions is ever declining. If it ends up getting documented somewhere, then no one will need assistance on this in the future.

Maybe Slot or Magnesium or --- well --- Yugo2Heck is the only other person I think might know. JPG if he isn't busy, maybe IEEE?

I've heard compiling ProQuake on Linux is a pain due to the "old library" issue.

Maybe someone like Magnesium could make step by step instructions, if they don't exist already.

ALSO: Why does -dedicated need VGA libraries? It's just a console, right? Or is my lack of imagination missing out on something important here?

on the debain apt-get packaging system, just look up "vga libraries".

Sorry Sniper, I set out to answer your questions when I got home but forgot about them. :(

perhaps someone could list all non-GL linux quake engines out there :)

ps - thanks slot. You're ever so helpful!

What error message is he getting? Would give a better idea of the problem.

The libs you are referring to are the old svgalib package files. These are old linux files for running higher screen resolutions in Linux console for things like the early Linux Quake. Sqpro is not much different in the way it runs in Linux than the old Linux squake which needs svgalib to run and it must be run suroot. You need to "chmod 4755 sqpro" and "chown root.root sqpro". libvga.config is the config file you need to edit for video, keyboard and mouse settings. You may have to uncomment the correct video settings in the file for it to work instead of using the video auto detect because the video cards it is looking for are from like 10 years ago. So try using either "chipset VGA" or "chipset VESA".

Also it must be run in console mode not an xterm. You have to exit Xwindows and run it from there.
