Hmm, after you open X windows run Quake then type "ls -l /dev/dsp" and then "/sbin/lsmod" and paste the result here. You can also try this but I don't know if it the same on your system:

type "tail -f /var/log/messages" then in another xterm run Quake and see if any errors related to the sound come up in the first xterm.

OK have you tried running Quake temporarily as root to see if sound works then? I see that /dev/dsp is owned by root while on my system it is owned by the current user. But then again read and write is set for group so I would think it would work anyway. If it isn't some sort of permissions issue then it looks like an old mmap issue i've been reading about online and I don't really know what to do about it. I'll have to see if I have a Quakeforge build you can try instead.

How do you fix sound in general? Maybe that's the case

Well I wanted to see that your sound modules were being loaded properly and the lsmod output looked like all is well otherwise you could have tried loading them manually. The sound system in Linux used to be controlled by drivers from the OSS project but now they are controlled by a project called ALSA that is backwards compatable with OSS but the MMap error seems to be an issue on some systems. Slot Zero sent me a link to a possible solution.

Try typing this in a console as root:
echo "pq3.5-quake.x11 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

I think you will need to do this every time you reboot the computer. Might be able to put this in a script later if it works.

Cool, I found this info which should automate the process.

Put that line in this file and it should be automatic.
/etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh

OK now denounce Bill Gates and delete your Windows partitions :D

Problem. Can't connect to max.essentrix.net. I have the security module (.so file). My best guess is it's because I'm using a x11 version of proquake. Any tips? Might be best if I can get the sqpro working (which I can't :S)

Help me please

As I mentioned earlier in this thread my 3.5 build is not signed by the author so it will not work with the security module. But I do have a glx only 3.2 build that is signed.
