Post subject:  Contacted JoeQuake Developer

Just a note: I contacted the JoeQuake developer, made some suggestions for his client, and welcomed/encouraged him to stop by and say hello at this forum, Yugo/JH's, TLTQ, RQP, etc.

For those that haven't read all of my posts on the subject: JoeQuake is a really slick looking NetQuake client that is largely derived from ZQuake/FuhQuake.

I will make screenshots of JoeQuake soon and reintroduce JoeQuake and the features.

The author of JoeQuake continues to add features to his great looking client.

Hi everybody,

Mr. Baker asked me to show up here, and tell about JoeQuake. Well, most info can be found on my project page, so if you haven't tried it before, go ahead and download the latest version to see what it's all about.
Originally I've started this project to make a clean and fast NQ engine which gives the most pleasant way for watching .dem files. I am a speedrunner myself, and have tons of demos on my HD. The reason is quite understandable now imho :)
So I began to develop my own little stuff and export things from the so cool-looking ZQuake and then later on from FuhQuake. It's more than a year that JoeQuake is under development now.
I didn't really supported anything in the net code until Baker wrote ma mail that it would be a worth effort.
The story ends here. I will continue the work on my engine and ff you wish something to be added into JoeQuake, just tell me and I'll try to add the feature.
Thanks for reading this far ;)

cheers,
-Jozsef

Ah, you've done excellent work, don't be so humble :D

JoeQuake is really great looking, derived from ZQuake/FuhQuake ... quite awesome.

I emailed Jozsef and suggested he add the ProQuake style precision aim and gave him some "localtime" code that a certain other person here wrote.

My quick list of cool things about JoeQuake wrote:
JoeQuake has ...

.. a new HUD setup with a much better layout and more screen realestate
.. special lighting effects that can be turned on
.. runs REAL fast for me
.. In the features list, has save demo as AVI capabilities (that I haven't tried out yet)
.. special demo playback features!!

JoeQuake is largely derived from ZQuake/FuhQuake code. Joszef has taken that Quakeworld client code and make it for NetQuake and added some new features/twists/etc.

And more features that I haven't got into fully (I spend most of my time marvelling how beautiful everything is with the effects turned on).

Baker,

Is it true that JoeQuake is largely derived from ZQuake/FuhQuake?

Yes, Sir!!

JoeQuake site wrote:
JoeQuake is an improved NQ engine with plenty of ZQuake and FuhQuake graphical effects included. JoeQuake's main aim is to provide pleasant demo watching for .dem files. JoeQuake also supports better graphical quality including 32bit textures, colored lights, smoother animations etc.

I'm not knowing much about laws and stuff, but I'm including a gnu.txt in the zip and also provide the source code as well, so it should be okay. You are free to redistribute or modify JoeQuake as you wish.

Why is the name "JoeQuake"?
Well, I'm struggling with lack of creativity... ;)

And Joszef be da man!!

Joszef, Ben runs the http://www.tltq.com/ site and the Quake servers listed on that site along with others Jean-Luc and Diazoild.

I did get to play around with the JoeQuake Client last night.. I have to say it seemed smoother? I noticed there was another .exe that wasn't GL? I assume that is for those who can not run GL am I correct? Haven't tried that one yet.. BUT my FPS was looking really really good!! I will look at all the other features but one feature that wasn't mention which is VERY important to me is that I can now Alt Tab to my desktop without getting blown out of the game!!

I didn't see that it was showing ping times when you died like the XQuake does? Is that something that can be added?

Nonono!!!
I _HAVENT_EVER_USED_ any QW code! I edited the q1source.zip's NQ code from the beginning, I've added all ZQuake/FuhQuake stuff into that.
Please note this! This is very important, you might want to ask questions in the future, like this:
"Hey, are you sure you've added every NQ physics correctly..?" - in case you would think I've made from the QW code.
No, pls forget this :) It's pure NetQuake code.

On another note, if you'd like to see JoeQuake in action, I can provide a nice tricking movie I made using JoeQuake. You can download it here:

http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?sda/vids/sda_promo.avi

or

Check out if you're interested. Ohh, and thank you everybody for the warm words and positive feedback ;)

Hehe, ok, that was just me explaining what I read the best I could.

I am more of a documentation/web developer/Quake config & settings guy.

Joszef ... some more introductions ....

Bam ... he's a friendly Quake player, likes to play, uses dialup modem connection and is a pretty good for being a HPB.

Cherrie ... plays a lot at DeadZone lately. One of the best regular RuneQuake players.

Pita ... one of the most loyal DeadZone players and takes an active interest helping others out and trying to get her Quake to work the way she wants it.

And some more background on a couple of others ...

Ben ... long time QuakeC coder and server admin. Combined with Jean-Luc (who runs the TLTQ web site) and Diazoild, Ben runs the hottest and most active set of RuneQuake servers and is very responsive to player feedback and has a ton of different admins that help him keep the game play great.

Slot Zero ... the coder for the RuneQuake. Not even quite sure what to say about Slot, since there is so much to say. He has been the maintained the mod since around 2000/2001 and is an incredibly knowledgeable about QuakeC and much more and has actively helped the ProQuake developer (JP Grossman) with testing and development. Seems all knowing to me on every Quake subject I can think of.

Others that I am not sure you have met yet:

RuneQuake Community Developers

Chuck ... long time caretaker of the Widomaker server before Ben. QuakeC programmer who has, among other things, has developed some real cool practice bots and integrated them into the mod for private practice. Tends to entertain everyone quite a bit, he was the guy that made many of us aware of JoeQuake.

IEEE802.11 ... RuneQuake Plus developer, added a TON of new and very inventive runes to the base RuneQuake code. Known at this board as "Mr. WiFi". IEEE is an extremely talented guy, his site http://www.rqplus.com and he has download links to JoeQuake currently as the top news item on his site.

Painkiller ... wrote the DeadZone mod and is a very active mod developer. Has been the owner/admin of the DeadZone server for a long time. His custom mod runs some very cool custom maps

Diazoild ... admittedly I don't know everything about DZ, I just talk to him a lot :P He runs the Singed server and is a co-admin at TLTQ.

More include: Jean-Luc (runs the TLTQ web site), X-Men (runs the Future-Vs-Fantasy Server and mod site), Dread (creator the eternal Dredd mod).

More NetQuake Community Developers

Yugo2Heck ... The IHOC chief. One of the oldest Quake continually active Quake communities that I am aware of. I don't know everything about Yugo, except that I have a great deal of respect for him and seems to be nearly omniscient to me. http://www.quake.ihoc.net/

JackHole ... Runs GameStatus.net and QuakeBoard.net and GameKeep.net. Again, there is so much to know about JackHole that I don't claim to know more 10% about him. He's been running QuakeBoard.net for a long time and there is likely a ton more I don't know. Another Quake omniscient type.

JP Grossman ... the ProQuake developer and CRMOD developer. Unparallel programming skills. http://www.planetquake.com/proquake

These are individuals I know and interact with, there are more individuals I don't know such as the CTF (capture the flag) community and some other dedicated servers (It is my understanding that Gandalf runs CTF and hangs around this site: http://fintek.ca/cgi-bin/v3/ikonboard.cgi)

Did I forget anyone? Not intentionally if I did.
